October in the Garden

  • Apply Wintercare Fertilizer to lawns.
  • Great time to plant new trees and shrubs or hedging such as boxwood or cedar.
  • Transplant existing trees and shrubs to new locations in the garden if necessary; use Wilson’s Transplanting to ease transplant shock.
  • Bring in tender tropical plants such as Hibiscus, Fuchsias, Daturas, etc…by mid-month; spray with Safer’s Three-in-One insecticide/fungicide to help prevent potential insect and disease problems.
  • Clear beds of tired annuals by the end of the month.  Chop them up and put them in your compost.
  • Plant bulbs like Daffodils and Tulips now for a fabulous show in spring.
  • Lift and store Dahlia and Begonia tubers. (please refer to our Summer Flowering Bulbs Information Sheet)
  • Start Amaryllis bulbs indoors.  Early varieties will bloom in time for Christmas.
  • Decorate your front entry for Thanksgiving and Halloween with fall planters, Chrysanthemum tubs, Ornamental Grasses and of course pumpkins and gourds.
